Who We Are

Freetown Farm Sanctuary is a labor of love – a network of foster homes nestled in the hills of Smith County, Tennessee.

Please surf our site and let us know how we can help you…or how you can help us. Together, we know we can make a difference.

The mission of Freetown Farm has several facets:

Rescue and Adoption

Animals just seem to come to us, and as we can accommodate them, we do. Our primary mission is to get them healthy – physically, socially and emotionally. Then we help them find loving, responsible homes. Our paperwork and requirements may seem stringent, but we are only trying to force people to consider the huge responsibility of pet ownership before they make a decision. Most of our rescues end up with us for this very reason: that people realized – after the fact – that they weren’t able to take on the commitment.

Sometimes, people are looking for a specific breed. Other times, they are too far away to be able to pick up a pet from Tennessee. We network with other groups and rescues around the country, and either help you find your dream animal companion elsewhere, or cooperate with others to transport the animals from one place to another.

We have no shelter location but are instead a collection of loving foster homes. Some animals in Freetown are either permanent or semi-permanent residents. They are unadoptable for one reason or another. We’ve had blind horses and dogs, three-legged foxes, distressed chickens, nervous birds and overweight pigs, many of whom still live and are loved by our family and volunteers.

Many dogs that have needed long-term behavioral therapy or socialization find themselves in the foster home. Eventually, some of these are rehabilitated to the point that they can re-assimilate into a normal family situation.

Rescued Hearts

– by Kathleen Parsonsur
Taking care of rescued animals
is something I do best.
I know because I’ve done it,
and I’ve surely passed the test.

The animals I’ve bathed,
the food I have fed,
The vacuuming I’ve done,
And all to watch a frightened soul,
Sit dreaming in the sun.

My own pets I’ve neglected,
But I tell them every day,
That I love and cherish each of them
Though a new one’s come to stay.

I know they understand this,
For in their eyes I see
The love that I have given them
Come shining back at me.

Some people think I’m crazy,
Some others think I’m great.
But very few can understand
What really is at stake.

If I can love and help an animal
To find a better way.
My own life is much richer,
I look forward to each day.

So now you know my secret,
It’s there for all to see
The love I give, the life I save,
I do it all for ME!
Rescued animals
Is something I do best.
I know because I’ve done it,
And I’ve surely passed the test.
